Add sales tax at checkout

Course Mark can add GST/HST or sales tax to each sale. Stripe Tax works it out from each buyer's address, and you report and pay what you collect.

Before you start

Whether you need to charge tax depends on where you are and where your buyers are. Course Mark and Stripe don't decide this for you, so talk to a tax specialist about what applies to you.

Stripe only adds tax where you've told it you're registered. Until then, buyers pay your price with no tax.

Set it up

  1. Set up Stripe Tax

In your Stripe dashboard, open Settings then Tax. Check your business address, then choose a category for what you sell. For most online courses, General - Electronically Supplied Services fits.

    Open Stripe Tax
  2. Add where you're registered

Still in Stripe Tax, open Registrations and add each place you're registered, with your registration number and the date it started. In Canada, that's usually GST/HST.

Stripe also watches your sales for free, and tells you if you're getting close to needing to register somewhere new.

  3. Turn on sales tax in Course Mark

Open your course, go to Publish, step 2 Get paid, and tick Add sales tax at checkout. If Stripe Tax isn't finished yet, Course Mark says so: finish it in Stripe, then click Check again.

  4. Publish your course again

Your checkout starts adding tax from the next time you publish.

What buyers see

The tax shows as its own line in the checkout's totals once a buyer has entered their country and postal code. Receipts and your sale emails list it too.

Good to know

  • Stripe charges its own fee for Stripe Tax on the sales it adds tax to. See Stripe Tax pricing.
  • You still report and pay the tax you collect. Stripe's tax reports, under Tax then Reports, show what you collected and where.
  • Keep Stripe Tax set up while the box is ticked. If it's switched off in Stripe, sales still go through, but without tax.
  • Each course has its own tickbox, so you choose course by course.
